Key highlights:

  • Kazakhstan has reportedly launched new crypto mining rules.
  • The government will provide electricity for large-scale mining companies.
  • The companies should contribute a portion of the mined assets to the national reserve.

Kazakhstan is now strengthening its hold on the crypto mining industry as part of the country’s vision of becoming a global industry leader. In the latest development, the government has introduced a new crypto regulation framework, especially focusing on large-scale Bitcoin mining.

Notably, the country remains one of the largest crypto mining hubs. Now, Kazakhstan is trying to connect mining rewards to its national crypto strategy. The move significantly highlights Kazakhstan’s growing efforts to expand its crypto ecosystem

Kazakhstan reveals new crypto mining rules

Local reports reveal that Kazakhstan has launched new crypto mining rules. These rules are introduced to govern large-scale crypto mining companies, enabling them to receive electricity at regulated rates.

The country has unveiled the new crypto regulations as part of the government’s broader financial strategy. In simple terms, the country envisions boosting its national crypto reserve via the latest crypto mining rules. In return for electricity, these mining companies are required to contribute a portion of the mined assets to the country’s crypto reserve. As noted by the authority, the miners will transfer the share to Astana Hub, the government-backed technology centre.

Interestingly, the “strategic digital mining” rules have been approved by the Kazakhstan government on July 18. These crypto regulations are likely to take effect on August 1, 2026. By helping large-scale crypto mining companies with electricity, the government is strengthening its own digital asset portfolio. The country hasn’t revealed what percentage of mined crypto should be contributed, but reports estimate it could be around 10%.

Crypto miners need to meet strict regulations

As Kazakhstan intends to connect crypto mining companies with the country’s national reserve, the government has also tightened the eligibility criteria for miners. According to the new crypto regulations, only large companies with strong infrastructure and technical capabilities could qualify to operate in Kazakhstan.

In detail, crypto mining companies should own a digital mining centre with a minimum power capacity of 150 megawatts (MW). In addition, they must use high-performance mining equipment capable of delivering a minimum of 150 terahashes per second (TH/s). Besides these major requirements, the companies should also own qualified technical staff. They must also maintain on-site repair facilities, secure multiple internet service connections, and remain compliant with tax and other legal obligations.

Kazakhstan continues to expand its crypto market

Interestingly, the latest crypto mining regulations come as part of Kazakhstan’s broader efforts to expand its crypto space. Over the past few years, the country has been making different initiatives to strengthen its position as a global leader.

For example, last year in September, the government launched the Alem Crypto Fund. This is an investment fund backed by the government with the vision of building long-term crypto reserves. Via a strategic partnership with Binance Kazakhstan, the fund made its first investment in BNB.

Another major program was Crypto Pay, a payment service launched in July 2026 by Alatau City Bank and Binance Kazakhstan. The project allows users to pay with digital assets using QR codes and point-of-sale (POS) terminals connected to the bank’s payment system.
