Key highlights:

  • Tanzania has unveiled plans to launch new crypto regulations
  • The Bank of Tanzania intends to protect investors from increasing crypto threats
  • The move comes amid a global trend of embracing stronger crypto rules

In line with a global trend of countries embracing clear crypto regulations, Tanzania is also taking a major step. The Bank of Tanzania is preparing to launch a new digital asset framework that aims to protect investors while also fostering the growth of cryptocurrencies in the country.

The move comes amid growing concerns about crypto-related threats. As many traders have already complained about massive losses of funds, the central bank is taking proper initiatives to address risks, including money laundering, terrorist financing, and other illegal activities involving digital assets.

Tanzania aims to protect investors with new crypto regulations

Tanzania is reportedly launching new crypto regulations, tightening the grip on the digital asset industry. As per the latest report, the Bank of Tanzania has taken the initiative to introduce a new digital asset framework to protect investors and support crypto adoption in the nation.

At the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, the central bank governor Emmanuel Tutuba stated,

“We are currently finalizing the preparation of laws and regulations for the supervision of digital assets, particularly virtual assets, cryptocurrencies, and stablecoins, so that we can strengthen regulation and oversight.”

Notably, the new crypto regulations of Tanzania intend to promise investor protection as the country is facing growing threats. The central bank governor revealed that many Tanzanian investors have lost their funds during transactions. Tutuba believes that these issues could be addressed with the launch of stricter and stronger crypto regulations. While the new regulatory framework addresses money laundering, terrorist financing, and other similar threats, the government envisions bringing a safer crypto atmosphere in Tanzania. He added,

“Many young people are investing in this area, but we have also received complaints from people who have lost money. We are therefore looking at how to put in place an enabling environment that will protect Tanzanians from further harm.”

Expanding digital finance oversight

It is worth noting that Tanzania’s decision to tighten its crypto regulations comes as part of the country’s broader efforts to expand its oversight of digital finance services. In recent times, the country has been taking the initiative to strengthen the regulations in the space, as electronic payments and financial technology have seen growing adoption. Thus, with the latest move, the country intends to foster the growth of the digital economy.

According to Governor Emmanuel Tutuba, the new crypto regulations will provide the central bank with better ways to monitor cryptocurrency and other digital finance activities. The framework will also help sustain financial stability, enhance consumer protection, and bring wider crypto adoption to the market under clear guidelines.

Global countries adopt clearer crypto regulations

Interestingly, Tanzania’s crypto regulation move comes at a time when countries across the world are taking similar approaches to digital asset oversight. As more countries are embracing digital assets, they are introducing clearer rules to reduce investor risks and promote the market’s growth.

Importantly, the need for stricter crypto regulations is mainly because of the growing number of security incidents. As mentioned in a previous CoinCodex report, the crypto industry has lost around $1 billion in 2026 to multiple crypto hacks. This significant rise has become a concern, which the authorities believe will be addressed by stronger crypto regulations.

For instance, the US has been working behind the popular CLARITY Act, which awaits passage in the Senate. Countries like the United Arab Emirates have already established clearer rules, envisioning a secure crypto market. The European Union has also introduced the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules, tightening crypto exchanges and platforms’ licensing rules.
