Decentralized identity is moving from an abstract Web3 idea toward usable infrastructure. In 2026, the W3C advanced new work around Decentralized Identifiers and verifiable credentials, giving crypto and blockchain applications a clearer standards path for proving identity, permissions and credentials without forcing every user to depend on one centralized account provider.
That matters well beyond login systems.
The next important question is reputation: can a wallet or digital identity prove not only who controls it, but also what that person has done, what they are qualified to do and whether they have a reliable history?
Semrush currently estimates about 390 monthly U.S. searches for “decentralized identity,” with a keyword difficulty of 36, plus smaller emerging demand around “Web3 identity” and “onchain reputation.” The category is still early, but it sits directly at the intersection of privacy, crypto infrastructure and digital work.
Identity and Reputation Are Different Problems
A decentralized identifier can prove control over an identity without requiring a traditional platform account. Verifiable credentials can then allow trusted issuers to make claims that users can present elsewhere.
Reputation is more complicated.
Knowing that a wallet belongs to the same person who completed a previous verification does not automatically tell a platform whether that person is a good trader, a reliable developer, or a creator who consistently delivers paid work.
Reputation requires history.
That history can come from attestations, completed actions, verified credentials, ratings, transaction records or other evidence. The key Web3 idea is that at least some of those proofs can become portable instead of disappearing when a user leaves one platform.
Creators Have a Reputation Portability Problem
The creator economy is unusually dependent on platform-specific identity.

Reliability — whether the creator actually delivered on time, followed a brief or produced useful campaign results — is rarely visible outside the company that paid them.
That creates friction for both sides of the market.
Brands have to repeat due diligence every time they meet a new creator. Creators have to prove themselves again every time they move into a new niche or platform.
A stronger Web3 reputation layer could make some of that history easier to verify.
A creator might be able to prove that they completed ten paid campaigns, passed a verification check, met a performance threshold or maintained a record of accepted submissions without exposing every private detail of the underlying contracts.
The goal would not be to put a creator’s entire professional life permanently on-chain. It would be to make useful proofs portable.
Privacy Matters as Much as Portability
A reputation system becomes dangerous if it treats transparency as the same thing as publishing everything.
Creators should not need to reveal private payment amounts, personal identity documents or every brand relationship just to prove that they are legitimate. The strongest credential systems are designed around selective disclosure — proving what matters without exposing unnecessary information.
That is one reason decentralized identity standards matter to crypto applications. A wallet can become more than an address while still giving the user control over which credentials are presented in each context.
For creator platforms, that could eventually mean a reputation system where verification, campaign history and eligibility travel with the creator while sensitive details remain protected.
