Key highlights:
- Hunter Biden launches the LAPTOP memecoin today on the Base network
- Biden attacked the TRUMP coin, whose fall resulted in the loss of investor funds
- 20% of the memecoin will go into the wallets of affected TRUMP users
The growing trend of US political figures entering the memecoin space has taken another surprising turn as Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden has launched a token called LAPTOP.
The LAPTOP meme coin has an extra political edge as Hunter Biden is using it as an opportunity to slam Donald Trump’s TRUMP meme coin, by announcing an airdrop for investors who lost money on Trump’s coin.
For years, Trump and right-wing media have been asking, “Where’s Hunter? Where’s Hunter?” Well, here I am. Clear, strong, seven years sober, and with a lot to say.
By now, you may have seen the article in the Wall Street Journal that I’m launching a meme coin called $LAPTOP.…— Hunter Biden (@HunterBiden) September 8, 2026
Hunter Biden is using the LAPTOP memecoin to target TRUMP
The LAPTOP token launched today under the $LAPTOP ticker. The token debuted on Coinbase’s Base network, with a total supply of 1 billion.
Immediately after it began trading, LAPTOP spiked all the way up to $315, but it has since crashed all the way down to the $1.50 range. Despite the massive price crash, LAPTOP currently still has a FDV (fully diluted valuation) of $1.6 billion and a market capitalization of $578 million.
30% of the total circulation will be set aside for the founders, including Hunter Biden. For the first six months, these tokens are expected to stay locked. Hunter Biden has also announced that 20% of the supply will be distributed through two free token giveaways.
Hunter Biden claims LAPTOP is a unique meme coin
According to Hunter Biden, memecoins are speculative. For this reason, users may cast doubt on the LAPTOP token like any other memecoins. However, he claims that the LAPTOP memecoin is unique and has a different purpose.
Pointing to the $3.8 billion losses of TRUMP coin investors, Biden noted that his project will also address these losses. For example, the memecoin project plans for an airdrop, which will provide some tokens to those who have faced significant losses due to TRUMP investments.
Further, he warned users that they should not expect the token to increase its value. Hunter Biden Claims he is not launching the token as an investment tool. Instead, he claims the project is mainly introduced to address the laptop controversy and help affected TRUMP investors. He noted,
“You should not expect me or anyone else to make this token more valuable for you. $LAPTOP isn’t just about owning something, it’s about saying something. Everybody gets knocked down. How do we help each other and our country to get back up?”
What is the laptop controversy?
The Hunter Biden laptop controversy began in October 2020, when the New York Post published material allegedly taken from a laptop Hunter Biden had left at a repair shop. Social media platforms restricted the story amid concerns about its sourcing and authenticity, prompting accusations of censorship.
Later forensic analyses confirmed that significant portions of the data were authentic, though not every file could be independently verified. The controversy ultimately centered both on Hunter Biden’s business dealings and on how media and technology companies handled the story before the 2020 election.
LAPTOP's token distribution plan
Interestingly, the LAPTOP memecoin has a unique distribution plan. As per the plan, around 20% of the token will be distributed through airdrops. Some of the tokens will go into wallets that lost their money due to the severe fall of the TRUMP coin.
In addition, 30% will be linked to political, crypto, and cultural predictions. If a prediction becomes correct, the tokens will be burned, and the supply will be reduced. If predictions turn out to be wrong, the tokens will be used for charity purposes. Another 30% of the token supply will be allocated to founders.
