Key highlights:
- Hunter Biden is launching a meme coin called LAPTOP on the Base blockchain
- He also plans to airdrop the token to TRUMP coin investors who are holding at a loss
- The project has drawn skepticism from crypto researchers over its token structure
The son of former U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed plans to launch a token called LAPTOP memecoin on September 9, according to the Wall Street Journal. It was also reported that some of the coins would be distributed to investors who lost money on the TRUMP memecoin, which is down a whopping 73% in the last year.
Hunter Biden unveils his LAPTOP crypto meme token
Hunter Biden teased the launch on X with a video compiling clips of news outlets and Trump administration officials referencing the laptop over the years. The device, which the FBI seized, contained emails, financial records, among others, used for coverage in conservative media before the 2020 election.

This token is yet another political coin, joining the TRUMP memecoin, which was launched by President Trump just before his inauguration in January 2025.
The memecoin will trade on Base and will mint a supply of 1 billion tokens. Founders, including Biden, will hold 30% of that supply. The tokens would, however, be locked for six months before unlocking gradually over the next two years.
Another 30% of the supply is linked to specific prediction market events. Those LAPTOP tokens would be burned if certain events happen, like Bitcoin hitting a new all-time high or a Democrat winning the 2028 presidential election.
20% would also be set aside for operational costs, covering charity donations, liquidity provisioning, exchange partnerships, and legal and accounting expenses.
An airdrop for TRUMP Coin losers
The rest of the LAPTOP memecoin's supply is reserved for two rounds of token airdrops. Eligible recipients of this airdrop include subscribers to Biden's Substack newsletter and members of a mailing list run by Andrew Callaghan, a friend of Biden's.
Interestingly, Callaghan's company has distanced itself from the project. They stated in a post that it has "nothing to do with" the token and clarified that Biden is simply using their mailing list to "expand his audience."

A portion of the airdrop is dedicated to traders who lost money on TRUMP. That coin reportedly generated about $1 billion in gains for the Trumps while leaving many investors in the dust.
Entities tied to the Trump Organization control 80% of TRUMP's supply under a multi-year vesting arrangement. This means both the Biden meme coin and the Trumps’ coin allocate most of their tokens to their founders.
Skepticism already brewing before launch
Crypto researcher "ultra" took to their X page after reviewing the pre-launch filings. They found that the actual structure differs from some of what was circulated online, noting that the day-one airdrop would go straight to Biden's Substack and Channel 5 subscribers. TRUMP holders would get their coins in a future allocation plan to be distributed at exchanges' discretion.
full findings from $LAPTOP pre launch investigation (most of what's circulating is wrong):
- launches on Base
- GSR Markets is the MM (1.55% of supply)
- day 1 airdrop is 10% of supply and it goes to Hunter's Substack and Channel 5 subscribers, not $TRUMP holders. 30 days to… pic.twitter.com/GPB3qUP79o— ultra (@0x_ultra) September 7, 2026
The researcher also flagged that the filings show that the issuer would retain 65%, not 60%, of the supply and added that the project's foundation has autonomy on when milestone conditions, like the burn-triggering events, have been met.
Additionally, the filing's risk disclosures acknowledged that meme coins "have primarily benefited early insiders at the expense of later purchasers" and stated that there is "no current plan to develop it further" after launch. The researcher concluded, saying, "I do not endorse the token and think this marks once again the top."
