Bitcoin investment spikes from $2,000 to $4.4 million in 12 years
Chris, opting to remain anonymous, revealed that he purchased BTC in 2011 for the first time, after his friend nudged him to invest in the asset. At the time, Bitcoin was trading at around the $1 mark, with Chris purchasing $2,000 worth of BTC.
He purchased Intersango, one of the UK’s pioneering cryptocurrency exchanges. As Bitcoin price rose through the years, Chris held on till things fell apart in 2014.
Intersango, facing a raft of financial headwinds, shut down its doors, freezing the man’s Bitcoin holdings. At the time, Intersango was not regulated by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority, limiting the options available to Chris to recover his frozen Bitcoin holdings.
Chris disclosed that he monitored Bitcoin go from a fringe asset to a mainstream asset over the years. BTC soared to reach its all-time high of over $126K in October 2025, pushing the value of Chris’ initial investment to a major fortune.
“It was a punch in the stomach watching Bitcoin go up and up,” said Chris. “After a while, I stopped watching it because I thought there was no point.”
While inching through life without access to his Bitcoins, Chris faced the challenge of aging parents and putting several children through university.
CEL Solicitors recover lost Bitcoin fortune
Chris disclosed that in 2018 he was contacted by Intersango’s co-founders asking for details concerning BTC he held on the platform. At the time, Chris dismissed the emails as scammers and deleted them, resigning himself to the fate that his Bitcoins were lost forever.
In early 2026, Chris’ wife urged him to contact CEL Solicitors, a law firm with a specialty in recovering lost cryptocurrencies. Chris reached out to the law firm, and within months, they gained access to his frozen Bitcoin on the defunct exchange Intersango.
At press time, the value of the recovered Bitcoin stood at $4.4 million. Chris confirmed that he is holding the Bitcoin in an FCA-regulated crypto exchange amid fears of being hacked while nursing plans to buy a bigger house and organize a family vacation.
CEL Solicitors noted that the co-founders of the defunct Intersango exchange could still be holding up to 5,500 Bitcoins, potentially belonging to former UK customers. While CEL Solicitors recovered the BTC holdings, recent estimates suggest that up to 4 million BTC are lost forever, with lost private keys and discarded hardware contributing to the figures.
Lost Bitcoins face a unique quantum threat. Since they cannot be moved to quantum-resistant addresses, they may become vulnerable to attackers capable of breaking Bitcoin’s underlying cryptography.
