Key highlights:
- Coinbase brings Apple, NVIDIA, Meta, and Alphabet stocks onchain
- The exchange launched these products with 1:1 backing from real shares
- The tokenized stock products are available on Base 24/7
Coinbase, one of the largest US-based crypto exchanges, has taken another major step to expand its services beyond crypto. In the latest move, the company is bringing traditional stocks onto the blockchain. The exchange is reportedly expanding its tokenized stock offerings by bringing Apple, NVIDIA, Meta, and Alphabet exposure to Base.
Coinbase expands tokenized stock offerings on Base
According to an official update from Base, Coinbase has introduced four 1:1 backed US tokenized stock tokens to the Ethereum L2 network. With this latest move, eligible non-US customers have 24/7 access to Apple, NVIDIA, Meta, and Alphabet. Base noted,
“Tokenized stocks bring the same properties onchain - global access, 24/7 trading, and full composability across DeFi - capabilities not possible with a traditional share.”
Notably, Coinbase’s tokenized stocks provide investors exposure to real US shares rather than simply tracking their prices through synthetic contracts. The B20 tokens represent a beneficial interest in one underlying Eyshare. This means that there is a real asset behind each tokenized asset product.
How are the tokenized stocks backed by real shares?
It is worth noting that the securities are issued by Coinbase Onchain SPV Ltd. The Coinbase-controlled company in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) holds the corresponding shares through a separate custody structure. This keeps the underlying asset separate and provides a clear link between each token and the stock it represents. The Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) approved this structure on August 4, 2026, under the ADGM rules.
For example, the NVIDIA token is linked to an underlying NVIDIA share held in custody. A similar structure also applies to other tokenized stocks like Apple, Meta, and Alphabet. This indicates that investors aren’t simply buying a digital token. But the tokens are linked to actual shares held through the issuer’s custody structure.
Tokenized stocks can be used across DeFi
Interestingly, the stocks issued as B20 tokens could be held in self-custodial wallets and used across supported DeFi applications. As noted by Base, platforms such as Aerodrome could be used for trading liquidity, while Aave, Morpho, and Euler could support lending and borrowing. 0x, 1inch, KyberSwap, CoW Swap, etc could help users exchange tokens.
Thus, eligible investors can trade a token on a DEX and use it later as collateral on a lending platform. The tokens can also be traded outside regular US market hours, including weekends and holidays. However, underlying stocks still depend on normal Nasdaq and NYSE trading hours.
One important thing to mention is that the development comes on the heels of Coinbase’s previous launch of tokenized exposure to NVIDIA, Alphabet, Strategy, BitMine, and SpaceX in June. As per the exchange’s statement, these products were designed to support onchain trading, redemptions, and distributions related to the underlying shares.
