Key highlights:
- BitMart could be reversing course from a total shutdown to kickstart exchange operations
- The exchange has hired global law firm White & Case, with a roadmap spelling out a restart plan in the works
- Previously, BitMart was inching toward a full business shutdown in January 2027
Troubled cryptocurrency exchange BitMart is tinkering with plans to reverse the scheduled winding down of its operations with a new roadmap in the works. The nine-year-old exchange previously told customers that full platform operations will cease on January 31, 2027, pausing deposits and new registrations.
BitMart rethinks its scheduled shutdown
According to an official statement, BitMart is considering making a U-turn from its earlier decision to bring down the curtain on its operations. The exchange disclosed that it had opened consultations with its stakeholders and professional advisers to explore a “potential restructuring plan as an alternative to a full wind-down.”
While the exact plans are still in development, the company did not rule out a phased resumption of its activities. If a deep assessment yields a viable pathway, BitMart says it will also begin distributions to creditors and reopen parts of the exchange.
“The potential plan may include the phased resumption of certain operations in an orderly manner alongside distributions to creditors, subject to further legal, financial, operational and regulatory assessment.”
BitMart added that it will give a clear status update on the consultation before September 9, 2026. In a strong show of intent, the exchange has hired White & Case, a major international law firm, as restructuring counsel.
On July 26, BitMart announced it would orderly wind down its crypto exchange operations, citing a mix of operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction. BitMart’s announcement came on the heels of scores of cryptocurrency projects shutting down in 2026, with BitMEX and Bit.com closing their doors.
BitMart’s customers complain of frozen funds
While BitMart’s original winding-down announcement did not mention financial troubles as a reason for shutting down, pockets of complaints about frozen funds have emerged. Several users took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their displeasure at BitMart for pausing withdrawals since the July 26 announcement.
“You locked user withdrawals and left your own staff without their earned salaries,” wrote one disgruntled user on X. “Now you expect us to wait until Sept 9th for another update?”
While users have questioned the firm’s solvency, the exchange has not published an independently verified proof of reserves to determine its financial standing. Meanwhile, its native BMX token is down 13% over the last day after tumbling by nearly 70% in the last 30 days.

Meanwhile, the broader cryptocurrency market is surging, triggering chatter of the end of the bear market. Bitcoin (BTC) is up 23% on the weekly charts, while Ethereum (ETH) is leading the altcoin rally with a 30% surge in the same window.
