  • Arthur Hayes will lead Flop Labs as its CEO, aiming to roll out a new blockchain for AI agents in Q1 2027
  • Hayes is positioning FLOP to be the de facto currency for AI agents
  • The incoming Flop Network will face stiff competition from industry first-movers

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has confirmed plans to take on the role of CEO at Flop Labs, building a crypto project designed to serve the emerging agentic AI economy. His latest move comes weeks after he announced a temporary retirement from crypto following BitMEX’s decision to wind down its operations.

Arthur Hayes unveils Flop Labs amid agentic AI ambitions

According to an X post, Hayes is coming out of retirement to serve as CEO of Flop Labs, which is building a new blockchain for AI agents with $FLOP as its native token.

Right off the bat, the incoming Flop Network is a “proof-of-useful-inference” protocol that allows AI agents to store their memories in a “decentralized, censorship-resistant manner.” At the heart of the blockchain is $FLOP, which the team is positioning as the currency for the agentic economy

“Agents eat compute, or floating-point operations, FLOPs,” said Flop Labs. “$FLOP will be the currency of the agentic economy, anchored by verified compute.”

A close look at the details suggests that Flop Network will use a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, with miners providing compute for AI agents and earning FLOP block rewards and inference payments. Furthermore, validators will store agent memories and act as the network’s trust layer, earning FLOP from block rewards and memory storage and retrievals.

Per the announcement, the genesis block for the Flop Network will go live in the first quarter of 2027. Meanwhile, the team hinted at plans for a “massive airdrop” before the end of the year, but exact details are still under wraps. Arthur Hayes added that there is no presale or VCs for the rollout, favouring a “100% fair launch” for FLOP.

“Let’s build the agentic economy’s currency together, fam and get rich!” said Hayes.

FLOP faces stiff competition in agentic AI race

Despite the buzz around FLOP, pundits opine that the project will have to play catch-up to several industry first-movers. Right off the bat, Circle has launched an entire Agent Stack with nearly all agent payments settling in USDC.

Meanwhile, Ripple is positioning XRP and RLUSD for agentic payments. In June, Ripple rolled out an agentic payments toolkit for the XRP Ledger in its boldest move to snag a portion of the fledgling industry’s market share.

BNB Chain has also thrown its hat in the ring, developing a Layer-1 targeting autonomous agents. Visa and Mastercard are wading into agentic payments, inking a streak of high-level partnerships over the last year.

However, pundits are pointing to Arthur Hayes’ market-moving reputation as a tailwind for the Flop Network. Hayes was BitMEX’s co-founder and created the perpetual swap, the most traded crypto financial instrument. BitMEX announced a winding up of its operations after 11 years, following a strategic review of its operations.
