  • Lee stated that he was not responsible for the company’s core business or assets
  • The move has fueled speculations that the company is facing insolvency

Once prominent crypto exchange BitMart is facing fresh concerns as Chief Product Officer Terence Lee stepped down. As the exchange was already preparing to shut down, Lee’s departure has added to the growing speculation that the platform could be facing insolvency.

However, Lee distanced himself from the situation, stating that he had no control over the company’s assets, accounts, or user funds. His statement hasn’t helped ease the growing tensions. Instead, concerns surged, with crypto streamer Travladd stating it “screams insolvency.” According to Travladd, Lee left the firm before the situation worsened.

BitMart CPO exit fuels insolvency concerns

Amid growing concerns about the potential closure of crypto exchange BitMart and its current financial stability, Chief Product Officer Terence Lee resigned. He shared an X post, claiming that he was not “responsible for the exchange’s core business.” Lee added that he wasn’t involved in the company’s operations, management, or fund-related matters. His statement read,

“I deeply regret the difficulties and impact the platform's shutdown has caused its users, and I fully understand their anxiety and concerns. However, I must make clear that I currently have no authority over platform assets, accounts, or matters relating to user funds, and I am not in a position to answer questions concerning the platform's operations or the disposition of its assets. Any claims should be pursued through the channels indicated in official announcements and through lawful legal avenues.”

Lee’s move has sparked widespread attention, with many raising concerns about the crypto exchange’s financial condition. Many believe that BitMart is currently facing insolvency issues. Crypto streamer Travladd argued that Lee’s departure itself is the biggest evidence of BitMart’s insolvency.

OpenGradient CEO raises fresh concerns

Another major figure who raised concerns about BitMart’s financial stability is OpenGradient CEO and co-founder Matthew Wang. He claimed that his market-making team still has funds in the exchange being not able to withdraw them. Adding to the current worries among investors, Wang stated that the exchange may be insolvent.

Further, Wang criticized BitMart’s move to ask its users to lock their holdings on the exchange shortly before announcing its closure. BitMart announced its shutdown on July 26. According to Wang, the exchange’s move before this announcement was intended to bring more liquidity to the platform as it was already facing problems.

Lawyer says BitMart shutdown has “gotten out of hand”

BitMart’s insolvency discussions and Leo’s resignation have gained attention from lawyer Cao, who previously served formal demand papers to the exchange. The lawyer stated that the platform’s handling of its shutdown has now become increasingly difficult for affected users. They are now struggling to get clarity from the officials about their funds.

Cao further stated that the victims claimed that they were affected by “chaotic and poorly managed” operations. In response to Lee’s statement, Cao criticized how the company officials can distance themselves from the responsibility. He added,

“I don’t usually air personal work here, but the BitMart situation has gotten out of hand, and my clients are victims of a chaotic and poorly managed cessation of operations… Not being in control of assets doesn’t exempt a co-founder from responsibility; you don’t get to opt out of accountability by stepping back once things collapse.”

These comments add to the growing concerns of BitMart’s possible financial issues. Although the company cited “operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction” for their closure, investors believe that the exchange is facing significant financial losses.
